Stars are supposed to go out like this by Julie Hogg
dans le 20e arrondissement de Paris,
Charonne, Rue de Bagnolet, tux,
gabardine slicker, rain rolling
the brim of a cavanagh edge,
shine off a taffeta brolly from
riparian shelter of a hotel lobby
and maybe you were born under
a gaslight à Belleville, too?
Fatting the street, glass of sanguine,
strut, allure of awry allos autos’
metal taps past the millinery shop,
cloche, brush step ball change,
pick-up hop tip hop; we’d be
hard to take seriously at the gates,
evergreen frondescence over stone
hermetic ossuaries, dite crystal
true allegories, as dry as a bone,
reradiating like cosmic dust
