after Philip Larkin – Coming
The stalk stretches in her fresh bed,
sniffing promises of tomato on leaves.
I return to the first time soil sent me sense.
Sprouted from the compost heap,
and rose up in another plant’s pot.
Now walls soften to the transplant.
Roots burrow in mulched disturbance.
Despite displacement, embracing light.
Fingering the possibility that from this rot
we will bear fruit.
