Dark blues and the crumble of pink bird wing

it was raining endlessly and the rain

washed my face

and my hands and my shoulders and my lips

and washed the tears out of my eyes

oh, cover my eyes please

with copper coins

so I don’t wander

aimlessly

between life and afterlife

the fire is no longer burning

above me the sky is open

and I walk into light and I walk into silence

I walk into joy

my arms are long

my eyes are searching serenely

and new voices can be heard and a rail car

that soothes my worn out body

and redeems me

the wild wind ravages your hair

ravages your skin and your shirt

and I can feel the tight embrace

of the darkness

the wind and the floodgate

Blues întunecat și fărâma de aripă roz

femeie cu trupul mirosind a iarbă

femeie cu degetele umbră

înfășurată în giulgiul umed al ploii

ploua nesfârșit și ploaia

îmi spăla fața

și mâinile și umerii și buzele

și ochii de lacrimi

să-mi acoperi privirea te rog

cu bănuți de aramă

ca nu cumva să rătăcesc

așa fără de seamă

între lumea de aici și lumea ailaltă

focul s-a stins demult

deasupra mea cerul s-a deschis

și pășesc în lumină și pășesc în liniște

pășesc în bucurie

mâinile îmi sunt lungi

privirea scotocește senină

și se aud voci noi se aude și o drezină

care îmi mângâie trupul ostenit

și mă mântuie

vântul turbat îți sfâșie părul

îți sfâșie și pielea și bluza

și parcă simt și eu cum

ne îmbrățișează strâns întunericul

și vântul și ecluza

Petre Ioan Crețu is the author of six collections of poems, including “Banshee or the uprising of the wooden leg”, “Blues for a pink fire hydrant” and “The killers of dreams”.  Crețu is currently working on a new collection, to be published in 2025. He is the recipient of numerous literary awards, most notably The Poetry Prize of the Romanian Union of Writers in 2020.

Cristina Savin, PhD Translation Studies (Monash University) is a translator working from French and Romanian into English. She is the French-to-English translator of two novels by Marie Lion; and a book chapter by philosopher Marcel Gauchet. She completed the translation of eight plays for a Compendium of 19th century French literature.
